Paintings &
Prints by Marcie Vallette info/statement Since I was
young, I have been a fan of science, scientists,
and science fiction. What particularly fascinates
me is movement of groups, both the movement of
particles (Brownian motion), the movement of water,
of air, and also the movement of groups of living
things, like birds, fish, herds and migrations,
frogs and tadpoles, swarming insects. I love to be
in nature, watching things -- the way animals in
groups will gather, interact, flow together, and
disperse. My more recent studies in Vipassana
practice, particularly focusing on "flow" (or
impermanence) also inform my work, both as ideas
and as direct experiences during meditation
practice and in the art studio. I have been working using a
printmaking technique I discovered for myself last
June. I was asked to teach an art class to kids,
and I wanted to teach something I’d never
taught before. I’d heard of people doing
styrofoam printmaking with kids,so I googled it and
watched some Youtube videos on how it’s done.
I gathered the materials, taught the class, and we
had so much fun that I wanted to keep doing it
myself! At the same time I was recovering
emotionally from a difficult year. During the past
year I’d struggled with the sudden and
unexpected death of Bradley
Fox,
my good friend. Together, we had founded the East
Johnson Plein Air club, which we had been running
together for 3 years. This was followed by the
death of my dog, Sophie, who had developed
insulinoma. During this time, I was also in an
accelerated, and highly competitive Nursing school,
working on a change of career. Shortly after I
graduated, we experienced a violent wind and rain storm that
tore the shingles off our roof on one side of the
house. My husband patched up the roof, but one
wall and the most of the ceiling in the upstairs
caved in from the plaster having been soaked. No one was harmed, but I
was left without a studio for the summer. My friend
Louise von Weise generously offered to share her
studio with me for a while and suggested we do art
together. Louise had been a friend of Bradleys, and
an active member of the East Johnson Plein Air
Club, too, and neither of us had a desire to carry
on the plein air club at this time. We have since been having a blast making prints
together! - Marcie Vallette, BFA, MEd, LPN BIO: Marcie Vallette has lived in
